Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, volunteer-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. It encourages people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.
Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was a writer, urbanist and activist who championed the voices of everyday people in neighbourhood planning and city-building. The annual Jane’s Walk takes place the first weekend in May (close to Jane Jacobs’ birthday on May 4th).
Her first book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities (1961), challenged the ideas of modernist city planning and offered a new vision of diverse cities made for and by the people who live in them.
Jane’s Walk was founded in 2006 as a living, walking commemoration of Jane and her legacy. Ten years later, in 2016, over 1,000 Jane’s Walks took place in 212 cities around the world, spanning 36 countries and 6 continents. Last year, several virtual walks were offered.
We hope that some community members will volunteer to lead walks in their neighbourhoods. To see the walks currently being offered, please visit List of Walks. All the details on how to sign up are on the Lead a Walk page of the Jane’s Walk Saskatoon website.

Earlier this year, plans were announced to consolidate three older schools in core neighbourhoods, Pleasant Hill, King George and Princess Alexandra, into one school to be built on the current site of the Princess Alexandra school. The new school and community space received $29 million of funding and will be built near the existing Princess Alexandra School on Avenue H. The City of Saskatoon along with the Saskatoon Tribal Council Chief are working together to house the White Buffalo Youth Lodge and other community services in the new space. These could include programs run by Riversdale, King George, or Pleasant Hill Community Associations including a skating rink in winter and community programming and events throughout the year.
There is still time to give input and feedback about this exciting new project in our neighbourhood. You can contact the Riversdale Community Association via email at riversdaleca@gmail.com to provide your input.
